Since the origins of computing, there have been games. Not only entertaining, it has been and remains a tool for learning, experimentation and knowledge transfer. This presentation will explore this dual dimension: learning by creating and learning by playing, through historical and Swiss examples, from the first electronic games to Smaky computers.

Creating a game was an ideal exercise for mastering the technologies that make it work, from electronic hardware to software. Gaming also served as a mediator between engineers and the public, allowing the latter to grasp the possibilities of these new machines in concrete terms. This approach culminates in educational video games, illustrated by the first Blupi games, emblematic of Smaky.

Between technology and culture, we will see how video games are intertwined with the history of computing.
